RIAM project has now been successfully completed. Deliverables

RIAM project has produced the following deliverables:

• D1: Review Document:
  This gives a broad overview of the existing literature.
• D2: RIAM Framework: Overlaps between Mobile and Accessible Webs:
  This discusses the existing work related to mobile and accessible Web, introduces the RIAM framework that aims to be used to systematically compare Web accessibility and Mobile Web barriers. Related to this document, RIAM project has also contributed to a number of W3C publications which include: Shared Web Experiences: Barriers Common to Mobile Device Users and People with Disabilities and Relationship between Mobile Web Best Practices (MWBP) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • D2.1: RIAM Framework: Content:
    This presents our literature survey on content that shows the common barriers between mobile and disabled Web users.

  • D2.2: RIAM Framework: Output:
    This presents our literature survey on output that shows the common barriers between mobile and disabled Web users.

  • D2.3: RIAM Framework: Input:
    This presents our literature survey on input that shows the common barriers between mobile and disabled Web users. A student research competition paper has been published at the 10th international ACM SIGACCESS conference on computers and accessibility (ASSETS 2008) related to this work: Input to the Mobile Web is Situationally-Impaired.
  • D2.4: Rerunning Shari and Trewin's study:
    This explains how we replicated Shari and Trewin’s study with motor impaired users with mobile users.
  • D2.5: Solution migrations for Input from disabled desktop users domain to mobile Web users domain:
    This proposes a number of solutions that can be migrated from disabled Desktop user domain to mobile Web users domain.
  • D2.6: How do people use their mobile phones while they are walking? A field study of real-world small screen device usage:
    This presents an observational field study that aims to explore how people user their mobile phones while they are walking.
  • D2.7: Investigating Small Device Users' Input Errors under Standing & Walking Conditions:
    This presents a user study that investigates what kind of input errors mobile users have when they are in a mobile context.
• D3: Mobile Web Barriers for the Barrier Walkthrough Method:
  This presents the barriers for mobile users and how they are developed and introduced to the Barrier Walkthrough method.
  • D3.1 Barriers Faced by Older Users On Static Web Pages: Criteria Used In The Barrier Walkthrough Method:
    Through an analysis of existing guidelines and literature surrounding the effects of ageing, this report presents a list of barriers faced by older users of the Web. These barriers can be used in conjunction with the Barrier Walkthrough method to assess the impact a Web page has on older users and their ability to interact with the content effectively.
• D4: Initial Validation Methodology:
  Rules, letter of the law and the spirit of the law.
  • D4.1: A Barrier Walkthrough Study with Expert and Non-Expert Judges:
    This presents the study that we have conducted with expert and non-expert judges and the major findings. Data collected in this experiment is also available at A Barrier Walkthrough Study with Expert and Non-Expert Judges - Experiment Data. Initial results are published at W4A 2009: Guideline Aggregation: Web Accessibility Evaluation for Older Users and we also have a paper accepted at ASSETS 2009: How Much Does Expertise Matter? • D5: Simulator Application -- Why not?:
  This discusses why we haven’t created a simulator and decided to use ACTF.

• D6: aDesigner and mobileOK Extension:
  How aDesigner is extended to test pages for mobileOK and how mobileOK library will be extended.
  • D6.1: W3C MobileOK Basic Tests 1.0 Checker Extension Supporting file URI Scheme:
    This technical report presents how mobileOK library has been extended to test pages served via File URI scheme.

Standards Effort

Dr. Yeliz Yesilada is a member of W3C Education and Outreach Group (EOWG) and W3C Mobile Web Best Practices. As a member of these two groups she makes contributions to the standards and best practices created by these groups. As part of the RIAM project, Dr. Yesilada co-authored the following two documents:

• Relationship between Mobile Web Best Practices (MWBP) and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) by Alan Chuter and Yeliz Yesilada. W3C Web Accessibility Initiative and W3C Mobile Web Best Practices, 2009.

Implementation

As part of the RIAM project, to achieve our overarching objective our team has contributed the following software:

• An extension to W3C mobileOK library: this is the first extension developed for W3C mobileOK library that can be used to validate pages served via the file URI scheme;
• ACTF validation extension: This extension can be used to validate pages with aDesigner against the “letter of the law” rules developed by the RIAM project.

Public Engagement

Throughout the RIAM project, we paid a lot of attention to public engagement and dissemination of our results to general public. Therefore, we made two press releases gaining over significant number of stories in national and international public:

• Mobile Users Make Same Mistakes as Disabled PC Users, 2008: Google search engine returns more than 6000 hits for this title.
• Disabled Technologies Pave The Way For Next Generation Mobile Web, 2006: Google search engine returns more than 1500 hits for this title.
